How to maintain a Zippo

How To Fill A Zippo Lighter
To fill a Zippo lighter, you'll need Zippo lighter fluid. Begin by removing the lighter from its metal case by pulling it out. Next, turn the lighter over and lift the felt pad at the bottom. Slowly pour the lighter fluid onto the cotton inside, taking care not to overfill. Stop once the fluid reaches the top of the cotton. Be cautious not to overfill, as excess fluid can cause leakage. Avoid direct contact with the fluid, as it can irritate the skin; if you do get some on your skin, wash it off promptly with soap and water. After filling, place the lighter back into its case, making sure the lid is securely closed to prevent the fluid from evaporating.

How To Install A New Zippo Wick
Over time, your Zippo's wick will need trimming or replacement. A new wick is white, but it turns black and ashy with use due to carbon buildup. It's important to replace the wick once or twice a year to ensure proper ignition. To trim the wick, pull it up with tweezers until fresh material is exposed, then use scissors to cut off the charred top. After about three cuts, you'll need a new wick. To replace it, remove the lighter from its case and take out the flint screw, felt pad, packing material, and any remaining wick. Feed the new wick through the hole and arrange the packing material around it in an "S" shape, ensuring the wick is submerged. Reinstall the packing, felt pad, and flint screw, making sure the flint stays in place. Finally, trim the new wick to an even length and return the lighter to its case.

How To Replace A Zippo Flint
Flints need to be replaced more frequently than wicks or lighter fluid, typically every few weeks for regular users. To replace the flint, first remove the lighter from its case. Using a coin or screwdriver, unscrew the flint screw at the bottom of the lighter, being careful not to lose the spring underneath. To remove the old flint, tap the lighter on a hard surface until it falls out. Use a paperclip to clear any debris from the flint chamber. Then, drop the new flint into the chamber and securely tighten the flint screw. Finally, place the lighter back in its case.
